Kevin McHale offered head coaching job. The Rockets have reportedly reached a deal with NBA TV analyst Kevin McHale that would make McHale the team's next head coach, according to Yahoo! Sports.Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reported that the deal would be for three years with a team option for a forth, and that the Rockets were sold on McHale because of his ability to communicate with and develop young players.An announcement could come after the holiday weekend. The Houston Chronicle also confirmed the offer.
Houston is courting Memphis' Dave Joeger to serve on McHale's staff, but the Grizzlies are trying to retain him, TNT's David Aldridge reported on Twitter. Also in the mix is Chris Finch, the coach of Rio Grande of the NBDL. The Rockets see Finch as a future head coach and would like McHale to mentor him, according to ESPN.com's Dave McMenamin.
McHale guided the Timberwolves to a 20-43 record to finish the 2009 season after replacing coach Randy Wittman early in the season.
McHale would take over for Rick Adelman, who won at least 42 games in each of the last four seasons, but failed to make the playoffs in the last two seasons. Adelman's Rockets reached the Western Conference semifinals in 2008-09. In recent seasons, the Rockets remained competitive in the West while dealing with injuries to the likes of franchise players Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady.
